About
Joseph Mason Thomas is a Session Drummer based in Bath,Uk
Joseph has taken influences from the genres of soul, jazz and rock to form his own style of being eclectic and creative. Always serving as a vocal point but never overpowering is something Joseph has worked on over the last 3 years and continues to do so. Capable of digging in and laying back for the ensemble is always Joseph’s target.
He is best known for his work as a session player for Evangeline where he provided fitting rhythms for live performances and recordings.
Joseph has also been involved with other projects which range from afrobeat/dub/jazz ensembles to experimental art rock.
Latest Work
bohosapiens
Since October 2021 I have worked with Norton Robey on his afrobeat/dub/jazz collective, 'bohosapiens'. We have worked closely together with 3 other musicians to create a project that brings people together in any live element. The project originated from our love for the energy and passion in live music. When Norton approached me for the project I had to study and research the stylistic features in the drumming as I was not involved in any other projects like this. The original sound for bohosapiens has evolved every time a new member has been recruited but the passion for bringing a live energetic, improvised performance has stayed in place.
Bludud
Over the last few months I have worked closely with Bludud to write suitable rhythmic sections for the unexpected, chaotic yet gentle compositions. To serve the songs, I payed attention particularly to the dynamics, trying out different methods and set ups in live situations. For gentle compositions I apply dampening to the drums by using cloths and snare weights. For louder compositions I have been working on keeping my toms tuned low for more sub, giving each song a different element.
Frank
Adam Daly and myself have worked closely on frank since November 2021. The project took a lot of genre directions before we found our sound. I worked closely with Adam in the songwriting process not only providing rhythm but organising song structure as well as lending ideas to lyrical content. Once we had written a set we started working on backing tracks and putting on a live show to remember. I had never played to a click before and working in this project allowed me to discover areas which I hadn't worked in before.
